A Yogurt Slingers Christmas Tale: The Christmas Party
The next day, the last day before Christmas, passed quickly. It had definitely been the busiest day of the year, with lots of people coming in buying gifts at the last minute. Strangely enough, Hitomi had called in sick that day, much to Ifrit's concern. She still hadn't said if she was going to attend Kana and Darkling's Christmas party or not, and the way she left the day before didn't make Ifrit feel comfortable at all.
The workday was drawing to an end. Darkling and Kana were about to head off to buy some stuff for next day's Christmas party.
"I wish you had invited us earlier," Arch said to Darkling, "then we could have done Secret Santa."
Darkling smiled. "Christmas isn't about buying presents. It's about being with people you care about!"
Arch smiled as well. "Yeah, that's true. But still, giving and receiving presents is a nice addition!"
"That's... a nice idea for next year, then!" Darkling laughed. "Anyway, we have to get going."
"Yeah, take care, you two. See you tomorrow!"
And with that, Darkling and Kana left. Still having a couple of more hours left, Arch went back to work. He and Ifrit had to really break a sweat to keep up with the seemingly endless stream of customers, and around 7 o'clock Ifrit had even decided to act as a gatekeeper: he stood next to the door, letting customers who finished shopping out, and preventing others from getting in.
Around 7:30, the last customer finally left and Ifrit locked the door from the inside.
"...Whew!" He exclaimed. "I thought there would never be an end to this rush of customers!"
"Yeah, and if it weren't for you, there still would be coming people in right now." Arch commended him. "Smart thinking, Ifrit!"
"Thanks. I felt I had to do it." Ifrit said. "Normally I don't mind a few customers past closing time, but enough's enough."
"Well, right you are."
The two of them looked around the store, and...
"...looks like a stampede came through here." Ifrit commented. Because it had been snowing outside, most of the floor inside was wet and slippery. Shelves were, at best, half empty and messy.
"Yeah, a stampede of horny students!" Arch jokingly added, causing Ifrit to chuckle for a moment.
"Well, I'm wiped." Arch said. "Do we really have to clear up all this mess?"
Ifrit paused for a moment as he looked around the store, then shook his head. "That would take at least another hour, and I don't have much energy left either. Besides, store's closed the day after Christmas day as well, we could clean it up then."
Arch sighed. "Good idea."
The two of them went outside with Ifrit locking the door behind them.
"Alright, well, see you tomorrow then!" A jolly Arch said as he donned his tuque.
"...Do you think she'll show up?" Ifrit asked, out of the blue.
"Are you still thinking about that?" Arch replied. "She's just... insecure. She'll get over it, don't worry. Besides, I'm sure Kana has convinced her to come by now."
Ifrit sighed deeply. "I hope you're right..."
"Yeah, me too..." Arch replied. "Anyway, see you tomorrow!"
Snowflakes started falling from the sky as the two of them both went home.
Next day: Christmas eve. It was still snowing, giving the entire city a beautiful white blanket. Streets were decorated with Christmas lights and all this light reflected on the snow, giving the world a magical white glow. Arch was walking towards Darkling's apartment alone. He had brought with him a case of his favourite beer, which he had saved for a special occasion. He knew that Darkling and Kana didn't drink beer, but since it was all he had he decided to bring it anyway.
Just as he arrived, he found out that Ifrit had arrived seconds earlier. Before saying hello, Ifrit had already noticed the case of beer.
"...You're trying to get me drunk again, right?" He said, jokingly.
Arch laughed. "Nah, this is... well, for me, I guess. And of course, for anyone who wants some as well, which would be, well, you, I guess, so..."
"Well, at least Darkling and Kana can save some expenses on the drinks this way." Ifrit answered. Laughing, the two of them proceeded to Darkling's apartment and knocked on the door. It didn't take long for Darkling to answer it.
"Gentlemen," he said, "may I welcome you to my humble apartment?"
"Yes, you may." Arch replied, jokingly, as he took off his coat.
Darkling stared blankly at Arch for a moment, then grinned. He turned towards Ifrit and bowed. "Welcome to my humble apartment." He then turned to Arch and patted him once on the shoulder. "...'Sup, man?"
Laughing, Arch entered the living room, followed shortly by Ifrit and Darkling.
"Oooh..." He said, clearly being impressed by seeing the table in front of him. It had been covered with a nice and clean white sheet, and it was packed with all kinds of side-dishes: green beans, mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing, everything. The middle was still empty, awaiting the arrival of the turkey.
Arch glanced over towards the kitchen area, where Kana was about to get the turkey out of the oven. She noticed Arch and smiled.
"Hello Kana!" Arch exclaimed, cheerfully.
"Hello, Arch-san." She answered with a gentle smile on her face.
Arch glanced at the table one more time, looked back at Kana and smiled broadly. "Well done!"
Kana giggled and started blushing. "Thanks..."
Ifrit, who came in shortly after Arch, noticed the table as well. Only he noticed something different...
"Oh, hello, Ifrit-san!" Kana said from the kitchen area.
"Hi Kana..." Ifrit answered in a low voice, not looking at her but still looking at the table.
"...Four plates...?" He mumbled after a moment.
"Yes..." Darkling answered from behind him. A little surprised, Ifrit looked up and stared at Kana.
"So, Hitomi..."
Kana's face turned serious. She didn't say a word, but simply shook her head.
"I see..." Ifrit replied, disappointed.
"If it means anything to you: it has nothing to do with you, Ifrit-san." Kana said as she walked from the kitchen area. "Hitomi has had some... personal issues, which is why she currently has difficulties trusting... well, men." she said, feeling a bit awkward. The three managers briefly glanced at each other, puzzled. Kana put her hand on Ifrit's shoulder and continued. "That's why she is so shy towards you, and why she didn't want to come tonight. I tried to convince her to come, but she said she was just too scared..."
"I... understand." Ifrit said.
"But... she will one day get over that... right?" Arch wondered.
Kana sighed. "I sure hope she does, Arch-san. She's a good girl and I hope you all will one day find that out for yourself."
She then hurried back towards the kitchen area to prevent the turkey from overcooking. She came back with the turkey shortly afterwards, but the jolly mood had almost vanished completely and made way for a gloomy atmosphere. As Kana put down the turkey on the table, Arch tried to cheer up Ifrit with some joking comments, with no success. Even Arch, usually 'mister optimistic' himself, started feeling a bit down.
Nevertheless, when the four of them were sitting down around the table, he put a smile on his face and raised his glass of beer in the air.
"Well, everyone, I wish you all a merry Christmas!" He said. "But before we toast, I want to thank our hosts for this evening, for having us here and providing this fantastic Christmas dinner!"
Darkling and Kana briefly glanced at each other, smiling. Ever since the four of them had been together, the two of them had been the 'caretakers' of the 'family', and Arch's kind words felt very warm.
"May our futures be bright and prosperous." Arch continued. "Cheers!"
But before everyone could touch their glasses together, there was a knock on the door. Puzzled, Darkling stood up from his chair and opened the door.
"Hey, Hitomi!" He exclaimed surprised. In the doorway, Hitomi was standing, her head bowed down a little.
"H-hello, Darkling-san..." She mumbled. "I... decided to come... Unless... I'm not welcome here?"
"Don't be ridiculous!" Darkling said, enthusiastically. "You're always welcome with us, alright?"
Hesitantly, Hitomi entered the apartment. "Ah..."
"Look who's here, everyone!" Darkling announced, smiling broadly. Three faces turned and looked at her.
"Heeey, there she is!" Arch exclaimed happily.
"I'm glad you came, Hitomi-chan." Kana said, smiling.
Ifrit, who was most surprised of all, tried hard to hide his excitement . "Hello, Hitomi." He said, smiling softly.
Arch put his hands together and looked up to the ceiling. "It's a Christmas miracle!" He yelled.
"Alright, calm down, you freak!" Darkling laughed.
While Kana was getting an extra plate and cutlery from the kitchen area, Hitomi joined the table. "May I eat with you?" She asked, as she started blushing.
Darkling, Ifrit and Arch looked at her, smiled and, without a word, nodded.
"Please, take a seat." Darkling said as he pulled back a chair.
"H-Hai!" Hitomi answered. "Thanks, Darkling-san."
Kana handed a big carving knife over to her. "Would you like to carve the turkey, Hitomi-chan?"
Surprised, Hitomi accepted the knife. "Hai, Kana-chan!" She said. A shy but friendly smile appeared on her face.
As Hitomi was carving the turkey, Arch looked at Ifrit, who was staring at her intently with a huge smile on his face. Arch couldn't help but smiling himself.
Looks like tonight WILL be a great night after all! He thought to himself, quietly, as he put his hands behind his head.
